Abstract

Mosquitoes and other insects utilize highly specialized sensory appendages and chemical receptors to track and exploit natural resources in their niche environments. In doing so, they can also transmit pathogens or cause damage to crops, both of which negatively impact human flourishing. A major goal of the Arthropod Sensory Biology Lab at Baylor University is to unravel the mechanisms of chemical detection by employing a range of molecular and genetic techniques. In the course of our studies we have discovered specific pathways that are likely to be vital for insect survival and reproduction. Our results may ultimately lead to the development of novel control methods or may be integrated into existing pest management strategies.
