Abstract
Animals are intimately connected to their environment, and as such, understanding how they interact with, and are influenced by, their environment is essential for understanding animal physiology and behavior. Research in the Shartau Lab at The University of Texas at Tyler uses animal physiology to address questions about how animals tolerate and survive in varied environments, and how this information can be used to address conservation and management of target species. Examples of this are taken from research on west coast species such as salmon and white sturgeon, and locally in Texas on neonate salamanders and crayfish. Collectively, this research seeks to address fundamental questions about animal biology that can be applied to more wide-ranging ‘real-world’ applications.
