SCHEDULE: Office hours are primarily weekdays, but responsibilities may require additional hours and flexibility that can include evenings and weekends.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Financial Aid Counselor is primarily responsible for counseling students in regard to their financial needs and awarding federal and state aid in compliance with regulatory guidelines and requirements.  All processes regarding requests for additional documentation, verification, corrections, packaging, awarding and follow-up will be the responsibility of the Counselor for his or her assigned caseload.  The Financial Aid Counselor should also be ready to assist during extended hours and with various projects as needed, including presentations at high school nights and recruiting events.

Financial Aid Counselors will provide guidance and support for students from acceptance at the University through graduation. These responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide assistance with filing financial aid applications and required documents, including but not limited to the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), loan documents and grant applications.
  • Determine student’s Financial Aid eligibility and award federal and state funding. 
  • Counsel students on the impact of changes in enrollment (dropping or withdrawing) including impact on aid eligibility, Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and Return to Title IV Funding (R2T4).
  • Recalculate financial aid for students according to changes in schedules in compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with students by phone, email, and office visits, providing high levels of customer service.
  • Work closely with Student Account Representatives, Registrar’s Office, Admissions team and Academic Advisors to best serve students. 
  • Stay up to date with federal and state regulations that impact the students’ financial aid eligibility (including but not limited to verification, satisfactory academic progress, changes to FAFSA, federal direct loans, and TEG eligibility criteria.)
QUALIFICATIONS:

A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, with a high level of computer literacy, and excellent communication skills.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry is required.  The ability to handle detailed financial information in a confidential manner is essential.  A minimum of two years experience in a higher education financial aid office or other financial environment is preferred.
