For the Fall 2024 semester, LeTourneau University's Writing Center services are available to students through both in-person drop-in hours and tutoring appointments scheduled via Starfish. Appointments can be done either in-person or virtually through a Microsoft Teams call.

In-Person Drop-In Hours

Starting on Monday, Sept. 2nd, writing tutors are available on a drop-in basis from 6pm to 9pm Sunday through Thursday in person in the Writing Center, AFSC Suite 128. No appointment is necessary.

Scheduling Appointments

Students looking for tutoring appointments can schedule a meeting with a Writing Center tutor by following these instructions:

  1. Sign in to Starfish with your LETU account information. Then, click "Schedule Appointment" and enter your search criteria to see the appointment slots that are available.
  2. Select an available slot and fill out your information to schedule an appointment with the tutor.
Tutoring appointments must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance — don't wait until the day before to schedule an appointment because there might not be any available.
  3. If you scheduled a virtual appointment, you will receive a link to a Microsoft Teams meeting to your LETU email address after you book.
It is important to check your LETU email regularly for important messages and updates about your LETU classes and tutoring appointments.
We also recommend downloading Teams for a better appointment experience. Once installed on your device, just log in to Teams using your LETU email and password.
  4. If you already have a draft of the paper you want to discuss, please share the most current version with the tutor (via Teams message or email) before the appointment.
  5. Just before your virtual appointment starts, join the Teams meeting with the tutor through the link in the email invitation or through the event in your Teams or Outlook calendar.
  6. If for any reason you cannot attend the appointment you scheduled, please email the tutor at least 2 hours before the appointment time to let them know you need to cancel.

Note: all Writing Center appointment times are in Central Standard Time.

If you have any questions or difficulties with this process, please email us.

Our Mission

The Writing Center serves students and faculty from all departments and all levels with one-on-one writing tutorial sessions. Our tutors can offer feedback on any type of written assignment—essays, job applications, reports, creative writing projects, and more. Our mission is to demonstrate the Christian virtues of hospitality and charity and to help our visitors grow not only as writers and thinkers but as people of faith and strong character. Our philosophy is shaped by the words of David I. Smith:

“When we teach, when we design learning, we offer a temporary home in which students will live for a while, and we shape the patterns of life together within which they will grow.”

—Smith, On Christian Teaching

Our Services

Writing Center tutors are available for individual appointments (which can be scheduled through Starfish) or during Writing Center drop-in hours 6pm-9pm Sundays-Thursdays. Our student tutors can help you:

  • Brainstorm ideas
  • Transition between sentences, paragraphs, or ideas
  • Improve organization
  • Use correct grammar and punctuation
  • Cite sources correctly
  • Use evidence effectively
  • Refine sentence structure and word choice

Location

The Writing Center is located in Career Services Suite 128 on the 1st floor of the Allen Family Student Center near the Admissions office.

Meeting with a Writing Center Tutor

To schedule an individual tutoring session, use our online scheduling system on Starfish. Appointments must be made 24 hours in advance.

During the fall and spring semesters, writing tutors are also usually available on a drop-in basis from 6pm to 9pm Sunday through Thursday in person in the Writing Center, AFSC Suite 128. No appointment is necessary.

What to Expect

The Writing Center isn't a “fix-it shop,” to use Stephen North’s phrase. Instead, our tutors guide your writing and shape habits that will improve not only the paper that you bring to us but all your writing in the future.

At the Writing Center, you don't just drop off your paper to be proofread and picked up later. Writing tutoring is an interactive process, so expect to discuss your paper, to read from it, and to answer questions meant to help you refine your thinking and writing.

What to Bring

Whether coming for an individual appointment or during drop-in hours, always ensure you bring the following with you to the Writing Center:

  • Bring the most current draft of your assignment, either printed or on your computer
  • Bring the assignment sheet—it is important for our tutors to know what your professor is expecting
  • Bring yourself!

Cheat Sheets

Writing Center cheat sheets are quick and easy reference guides to common issues people have when writing papers. Printer-friendly versions of all our cheat sheets are available at the links below.
