Sometimes people are surprised that a scientist can be a Christian, and a Christian can be a scientist: I have received comments both ways. I see part of my role as a person as explaining one to the other. Personally, I don't see a dichotomy with being a Christian and a scientist, since all truth, ultimately, comes from God. Whether truth is discovered by repeated experimentation, developing hypotheses, and testing and retesting them, or from intensive study and prayer, ultimately God designed things to be the way they are.
One of the habits my parents had was a love of reading, and fortunately, they passed that on to me. Below I have listed some books I have found helpful as a Christian and a scientist. I've also listed what I am currently reading (which means I need to update this page periodically), and some quotes I like. If you have any comments or questions, let me know. Thanks!

Some books that have been very helpful to me
- The Galileo Connection, by Charles Hummel, InterVarsity Press, 1986. A reasoned approach to resolving "conflicts" between science and the Bible. Hummel is a good writer, and what he says makes sense to me.
- Origins: Christian Perspectives on Creation, Evolution, and Intelligent Design, by Deborah B. Haarsma and Loren D. Haarsma, Faith Alive Christian Resources, 2011. The Haarsma's treat all the major views on origins fairly, giving pros and cons, without pushing their personal views. There are questions and resources at the end of each chapter.
- Mapping the Origins Debate, by Gerald Rau, InterVarsity Press, 2012. Rau presents six views of origins, and compares and contrasts the different views. He includes some great summary tables in appendices
- Basic Christianity, by John R. W. Stott, InterVarsity Press, 1986. A classic book on who Jesus Christ is, what he did, and why it is important to people.
- Jesus Mean and Wild: The Unexpected Love of an Untamable God, by Mark Galli, Baker Books, 2008. The author looks at Jesus' life through various incidents recorded in the gospel of Mark, trying to shatter the "gentle Jesus, meek and mild" image many people have.
- The Bible. This is kind of obvious, but it's amazing how few people have actually read it and studied it. If you haven't, I'd encourage you to do so. Start with the gospel of Mark in the New Testament, and see who Jesus is and what He does.
Books I'm Currently Reading
- Breaking the Idols of your Heart, by Dan B. Allenger and Tremper Longman III. It discusses some things (such as power, money and relationships) people are tempted to pursue rather than God.
Quotes I Like
"Young people, especially young women, often ask me for advice. Here it is, valeat quantum. Do not undertake a scientific career in quest of fame or money. There are easier and better ways to reach them. Undertake it only if nothing else will satisfy you; for nothing else is probably what you will receive." Cecelia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979), astronomer, quoted in "Eurekas and Euphonias: The Oxford Book of Scientific Anecdotes," by Walter Gratzer, Oxford University Press, 2002, page 293.
"The scientist does not study nature because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, and he delights in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, and if nature were not worth knowing, life would not be worth living." Henri Poincaré, French mathematician. Taken from "Professors who Believe", edited by Paul M. Anderson, InterVarsity Press, 1998, page 89.
"My professional life is divided between teaching and research (with the inevitable pound of flesh for administration - administrators who have power can do good; administration as it comes to the average faculty member's experience involves no power and centers on paperwork.)" Keith E. Yandell, professor of philosophy, University of Wisconsin, as quoted in "Professors who Believe", edited by Paul M. Anderson, InterVarsity Press, 1998, page 213.
