Construction Management

Framing up a Habitat for Humanity houseIntroducing the ultimate major for those who are truly built to bring builds to life. This degree was designed for the brains created to camp out at the convergence of all the key aspects of construction—civil engineering, business, and architecture.

Construction Management, B.S.

Our construction management degree is designed to mirror the cross-pollination found on a construction site. You’ll have exposure to a well-balanced suite of disciplines, and your educational experience will reflect it. Accounting, materials joining, civil engineering, finance, environmental engineering, project management, team design, and manufacturing processes are to be expected. Less expected, but critical at the Christian Polytechnic University: communications, theology, civic engagement, and humanities & fine arts. Not only will you graduate with the confidence built from the hours upon hours of applied learning in premier labs that make you industry-ready from day one, but also the confidence in your exceptional relational skills and perspective that God is in and through all things—construction calling, included.

How do I know if this degree is for me?

  • You don’t want to be stuck at a desk all day. Construction managers likely have an office, but the bulk of their time is spent in an onsite field office in the middle of it all.
  • You’re technically inclined but naturally relational. Successful construction management requires both: broad working knowledge of the hands-on engineering, trades, processes, and design construction requires, and the analysis, business, communication, decision-making, leadership skills management requires—with the human quotient at the heart of it all.
  • You’re unfazed by juggling multiple demands at once. You organically find yourself at the center of group projects.
  • You’re not daunted by math, but you likely prefer real-time, practical problem-solving. Your friends know you’re the kind of smart and helpful that makes you a typical go-to in tricky situations.
  • You’re analytical but grew up working with your hands. Work boots and dirt are your comfort zone.

What do construction managers do?

Construction managers plan, coordinate, budget, and supervise projects from start to finish. These might include public, residential, commercial, or industrial structures, or infrastructure projects such as roads and bridges. Sometimes known as general contractors or project managers, these key leaders oversee the construction phase of a project, including personnel, cost-control, and plan refinement. This mix includes:

  • Preparing cost estimates, budgets, and project timetables
  • Speaking the language of key project partners: architects, engineers, subcontractors, and financiers
  • Assuring project compliance with all legal requirements and safety codes
  • Monitoring & reporting project progress to construction firm and clients
  • Coordinating, scheduling, & managing all subcontractor activities relating to the project
  • Troubleshooting any site delays, issues, emergencies, or other problems

What courses could I take?

You’ll quickly find learning takes place around here in labs and on teams even more than in classrooms and on paper. A requirement of CMGT is Senior Design I and Senior Design II, meaning you’ll be practicing your developing skillset on a team with students from other engineering majors to manage a project, start to finish. In addition to that apex project, some examples of interesting courses you will take while earning a construction management degree at LeTourneau University include:

  • Construction Estimating
  • Construction Law & Administration
  • Relational Management Elective
  • Sustainability & Stewardship
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Construction Scheduling & Economics
  • Principles of Finance
  • Principles of Management
  • Organizational Behavior or Dynamics of Leadership
  • Human Resource Management, Supply Chain Management, or Conflict Resolution
